Why You Never See A Language Learning Trick That Actually Works

It was never easy to learn a new language. Each language is different from each other, even though some have similarities in which speakers can actually understand each other without learning the language.

The comprehension in to which it could be the same as your native language is just rare to happen. When we want to say something that feels like no words can express it, we switch to our native language.

By having the courage to learn a new language is the best move that someone can do to learn a new language. No one would learn anything just by thinking to learn about it.

Therefore, by saying that there’s an actual trick to learn a new language is so vague. Since each language is different, how would a trick exist then? By putting it like this, we can say then that tricks could exist but varies on different languages.

So why do you never see a language learning trick that actually works? We’ll talk about it below.

Learning is Adaptive

The same as each language is different, the human brain is also different from other brains. Our brain’s thinking capacity won’t be the same as someone, even so, when we dig into deeper details, it still differs.

Learning a new language is then adaptive because each person applies different methods to learn a foreign language. With these methods, people can share it to the world and we’ll know that one method is the average effective method.

But this is indeed just the average and even the least effective method may be the most effective to someone else. With this uniqueness, each language learner would need to find their own method, the method where they actually learn something productively.

It is proven that each brain has a unique anatomy in which the methods that we apply could be affected by the culture and society that we’re in. Still, it’s good to know that learning is adaptive because then one doesn’t need to worry about excelling in something without it being one’s best feature.

No Language Engagement

I have made an observation myself and would conclude then that language engagement plays a big role in learning a new language.

We learned our native language by listening to it every single day, the day we were born to the day we started to speak. It was just tinted in our brains and no one taught us about it.

Schools teach us only to become better with our native language so that we can excel in writing and speech. But even without school education, we are conversant with our native language already.

So I think that this method of learning a language doesn’t stop when we grew up. Involving ourselves to native speakers could be the best thing that we can do to grasp the grammar of the language without even having formal education about it.

But don’t mistake it with not learning anything. You CAN’T learn anything by doing nothing. I mentioned not needing formal education but it is still needed to read and study about the grammar rules.

You’re Not Interested with the Language

To learn a new language, you need to be interested in it. Interest is a state of physicological excitement and it is indeed associated with learning.

The link above talks about how the power of interest drives learning. It is simply because if you’re interested in something, then you’ll do anything to be perfect on it, to be better on it. That’s how being interested means.

Therefore, we can say that if you’re not interested in something that you’re learning then you won’t have the drivenness to really learn it.

Since you’ve started to learn that language that you’re learning then it means that you’re interested with it but that doesn’t mean that you have the interest to continue perfecting your knowledge on that language.

Interest to learn a language is just the first step that one can do but interest in continuing and pursuing fluency is a different topic.

You’re Not Trying Hard

You should consider language learning as a skill and with every skill, if you want to be good at it, you need to try hard. Trying hard on these types of things are considered normal because trying to speak on the language that you’re learning is the best thing that one can do.

I always remember what my language teachers on school said where they always encourage us to speak even if we’re not good at the language yet. It’s the best method that someone can do to calibrate their brain to the language they’re learning.

People should know that when we’re thinking something, it doesn’t mean that it will flow exactly like that when we apply it through speaking, writing, or reading. It will always be different because, in our brains, it is our imagination that we use while speaking, writing, and reading are in reality.

Also, if you’re talking with the language you’re learning then it will make learning the language easier because your brain will try its best to construct correct sentences even if you’re not perfect at it yet. It is because your brain tries to apply what it sees and hears.

You Don’t Study the Grammar

Studying grammar is one of the vital parts of language learning. Why is it important? It is because when you start studying the grammar and then get a good grasp of it, even though you haven’t got much vocabulary yet then you can still formulate correct structures of text.

It is also because when we’re learning a new language, we try to apply the grammar of our native language or our second language which isn’t the best basis to do because every language has its different grammar. If we’ll base the new language then it will just sound as if you’re literally translating your native language and not learning a new one.

When learning a language it is good to know that you should forget that you actually know some other languages if you do. Try to pretend that the language you’re learning is the only language that you know. Only speak that language and don’t try to compare its grammar to your native one.

By doing this, you’re tricking your brain to learn more because if not, then you won’t be able to communicate with other people. In that way, it will do its best to learn the language faster.

Studying the grammar, every bit of it is very important because it’s the backbone of every language and when you learned it well, you only need then to learn new words which is one of the easiest parts of language learning.

Focus on grammar rules which are not present on the languages that you’ve already know. For example; in some languages, they have genders such as masculine, feminine, or neuter which has no basis on how to differentiate them from each other. While other languages have unusual grammar which if translated literally to English makes no sense.

Moreover, some languages have different articles for different forms of nouns which makes it very hard to learn it. Some are simply unique to their language that it just can’t be explained.

Not Learning the Writing System

If you’re learning Spanish, German, French, or Norwegian then you won’t need to worry much because the majority of the alphabet can be found on the English lexicon too. However, if you’re learning Japanese, Russian, Mandarin, or Korean then you would need to learn a whole new writing system too.

Each writing systems have their unique characteristics too which some may be too much to handle for language learners. For example, Mandarin has more than 500 characters which is too much compared to English with only 26 official alphabet characters.

However, if you’re learning French then take in mind too that they don’t write as they speak. They have more vowels on writing than in speaking which makes the writing side difficult too compared to Spanish which is what you see is what you speak.

Not Learning the Sounds of the Language

I’m sure that there’s at least one sound from the language you’re learning which doesn’t exist on your native language and learning these sounds makes you one step closer to your goal; to sound more like a native.

To sound like a native is the best thing that a language learner could think of but it is not easy as it sounds. It’s not just learning the vowel sounds that are important when adapting to the sounds. One needs to learn how the native speakers talk too.

In German, they talk like they’re always angry or at least that’s what the stereotype is. In Russian, they talk like there’s something on their mouth that won’t come off. In Norwegian, they talk like they’re singing. And every other language has its unique sound which every language learner should take note about too.

With this method, you will sound more like a native speaker. Don’t get me wrong though, accents are cute but sounding like a native is just on a different level. People would mistake you as native sometimes when you know how to play with the sounds of the language.
